Most know 4chan, but few realize it inherited its culture from 2channel (2ch), Japan's legendary forum. 2ch had a whole ecosystem of ASCII art cats—Giko Neko, Mona, and the melancholic Shobon (´・ω・`). When 4chan launched in 2003, these AA characters migrated across the Pacific. Shobon became "Doge" before Doge existed—a reaction face representing mild disappointment, confusion, or resigned sadness. That droopy expression (´・ω・`) captured something universal.
